The history of this sleigh is uncertain but it is likely that it was imported into Scotland from Russia by a Macpherson of Glentruim, near Newtonmore.

The Macpherson in question was a friend of Emperor Nicholas I and built ships in Russia in the mid-19th Century.  The sleigh may even have been a gift or have a significance that is presently unknown.

A painting, dated 1874, which hung in the hall at the great house at Glentruim, depicts the sleigh in use and helps to date the vehicle but its exact history remains a mystery
