Services
In addition to welcoming visitors to our museum, learning activities and special events, Grampian Transport Museum offers a range of specialist transport and industry-related services and facilities.
Services Offered by GTM
Each year, Grampian Transport Museum welcomes dozens of societies, clubs and corporate sponsors who host their own events at our outdoor arena and track.
Our purpose-built arena features a modified bitumen surface designed to cope effectively with any oil spillage from vehicles. Originally developed by Shell for use on racing circuits, it is the same high-performance surface used on Grand Prix tracks and at renowned venues such as Silverstone and Donington Park, providing both durability and authenticity for motoring events.
Our team is on hand to support you at every stage, ensuring your event runs smoothly and successfully. To discuss your requirements, please call 01975 562 292 and ask for the Events Team.
Our on-site Collection Centre provides secure, modern and air-conditioned storage for some of Scotland’s most treasured vehicles.
A dedicated, locked and alarmed first-floor area is reserved exclusively for this purpose, with storage fees contributing directly to the ongoing running costs of the building.
We believe this is the only ‘museum-quality’ vehicle storage facility of its kind in Scotland. The state-of-the-art building offers a dust-free, UV-free, humidity-controlled environment with high levels of security — ensuring optimal preservation conditions.
Spaces are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, after which a waiting list operates.
For further information about our storage facility, please contact Sharon on 01975 562 292 or via the contact page.
Our library and archive hold many publications, materials and ephemera from the history of transport and industry, including:
- Transport publications on cars, motorcycles, trucks, military vehicles, trains and horse-drawn vehicles
- Manufacturers’ workshop manuals, owners handbooks and parts catalogues for a wide range of private and commercial vehicles, including an extensive collection of Haynes workshop manuals
- A substantial archive of point-of-sale material — including original showroom brochures. A full list of items is available on request, and materials may be viewed by application to GTM's Assistant Curator.
- A collection of high-quality professional publicity photographs issued with original press releases for new vehicle models.
- Copies of Glass’s Guide to Car Values and Glass’s Index of Suffix Marks/Registration Numbers (1936–1985), which are valuable resources for researching vehicle histories.
- An extensive range of motoring magazines, including Autocar, The Motor, Motor Sport, The Motor Cycle and many other titles, dating back to the 1950s and, in some cases, the pre-war period.
- A complete bound run of The Railway Magazine (1897–1957), documenting developments across the rail network.
- The Great North of Scotland Railway locomotive plans collection, scanned by the GNSR Association. As these are not owned by the museum, applications for copies should be made directly to the GNSR Association via their website.
Our library and archives are available by special request, preferably arranged in advance of your visit. The museum is committed to providing the widest possible public access to its collections.
If there are specific materials you wish to consult, please enquire at the front desk or contact the Assistant Curator, Neil, in advance of your visit.
Grampian Transport Museum hopes to introduce a Heritage Tool Library in 2026, thanks to support from Museums and Galleries Scotland through the Museum Futures programme. Follow our social media channels for updates.
Grampian Transport Museum can offer its spaces and facilities for commercial and filming purposes. This is offered on a case-by-case basis, subject to availability and event schedule — contact us for more information.

Tripadvisor Review:
"Great exhibits covering different modes of transport, the staff were lovely, and very helpful and informative. The wee cafe was lovely and the hot chocolate was the best I've had for a long time. Well worth a visit."
