On Friday 20th October the award-winning Grampian Transport Museum took a step forward towards an exciting future with its first ever Drive in Movie. Planned for the weekend before, the high winds experienced across the north-east prevented the big screen from being erected so the evening was moved forward a few days. Over 140 vehicles turned up for the ‘GTM Late’ experience of a tour of the museum followed by a complimentary showing of the highly popular firm ‘Back to the future’ – via the museum tearoom which was serving burgers, hot dogs and popcorn as you would expect on such an occasion!

Museum Manger Ross McKirdy was hugely relieved when, despite one or two ‘first time hitches’  the audience left saying “It was brilliant, do it again!”

“We were delighted by the response to our first ever late-night event” said Ross “with over 140 vehicles driving in for the cinema. We had planned it all as best we could but we learned such a lot when it really happened! There were some technical issues but the enthusiasm of the audience overcame them and the atmosphere was brilliant. For those clamouring for us to repeat the experience – watch this space!”

‘GTM Late’ was the brainchild of the museum staff to help raise money for the self-funding charity in order to carry on its work of restoring, preserving and displaying land transport heritage exhibits for generations to enjoy and learn about our past. The museum is open 7 days/week until the end of October after which it is getting ready for the real Santa to return to his favourite place!
